i'm a bit embarassed by my lack of posting. i simply got tired of the trials and tribulations of twice-weekly physical therapy. despite grand ambitions , i didn't run in the chicago marathon. instead, as the other accidental marathonists trained and all suceeded in finishing the marathon, i went to physical therapy twice a week.

i discovered that i'm far, far more competitive with myself than i ever would be with other people. i endured a very cliche conversation with my physician who told me in no uncertain terms that i would never run again. i happily played the part of water boy to help everyone else train during the hot summer months. i came to grips with the fact that i was not going to attain something that i had really, truly set as a goal.

and today, after nearly four months of therapy, i woke up and decided that i might go for a run. maybe a block. maybe two.

today, i ran three miles. and it felt pretty good.

and i guess that's what being an accidental marathonist is all about.

"I think you devise your own limits for your own personal convenience. There are some people who wish to have limits, and they'll invent as many boxes for themselves as they want. It's like, you know, men invented armor. They wanted to protect themselves from the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune and so forth. And people do the same thing psychically and psychologically. They build their own armor. They build their own rathole, whatever it is. And they choose their existence. Whether they do it consciously or whether it is helped along by a government or an education system, somebody is helping to shape this imaginary box you live in, but it doesn't have to be there."
